Change of Character (CHoCH)
The first structural break against the prevailing trend — an early, objective warning that control may be shifting from one side to the other.
What is a Change of Character?
A Change of Character (CHoCH) is the moment price breaks the most recent countertrend swing: in an uptrend, a close below the last higher low; in a downtrend, a close above the last lower high. It is the earliest structural evidence of a possible reversal — the trend's rhythm of continuation has been interrupted.
A CHoCH is a warning, not a guarantee. Trends regularly survive shallow CHoCHs, especially on lower timeframes where they are often just the internal mechanics of a pullback. Quality is judged by context: a CHoCH after a liquidity sweep of a major external pool, with displacement, at a higher-timeframe premium or discount extreme, is a very different event from a drift through a minor swing.
The reversal sequence
Textbook reversals follow a repeatable order: (1) price sweeps external liquidity beyond a significant high or low, (2) displacement in the opposite direction breaks the countertrend swing — the CHoCH, (3) price retraces into the origin of that displacement (order block, breaker, or fair value gap), and (4) continuation confirms with the first BOS in the new direction. Entries taken at step 3 with stops beyond the sweep define risk objectively.
How Pushing Profits applies it
The platform's structure-shift detection feeds signal quality scoring — a confirmed shift in the signal's direction adds confluence, while a fresh opposing shift vetoes the trade. Combined with liquidity-sweep confirmation and options-flow alignment, this keeps reversal signals anchored to the full sequence instead of a lone structural break.
Frequently asked questions
How is CHoCH different from BOS?
Direction relative to trend. A BOS breaks a swing WITH the trend (continuation); a CHoCH breaks a swing AGAINST it (potential reversal). The two labels describe the same mechanical event — a swing break — in opposite contexts.
Should I reverse my position on every CHoCH?
No. Most CHoCHs on lower timeframes are just pullback mechanics. Act on the ones that follow a liquidity sweep at a meaningful higher-timeframe level with displacement, and let a confirming BOS validate the new trend.
What is a Market Structure Shift (MSS)?
MSS is often used interchangeably with CHoCH; some traders reserve MSS for a displacement-driven break specifically. Both describe structure turning against the prior trend.
